What specification is proposed?

The Biology course follows the AQA Specification.

Over the last 30 years the field of biology has developed more than any other science, this has been due in part to our increased knowledge in the field of molecular biology. This has allowed us to manipulate DNA and genes, so modifying organisms and potentially leading to the treatment of genetic diseases. The biology course has a broad base that prepares the student well for biology, medical and many other courses and jobs.

What will I be covering in the course in Year 12?

Year 12:

  • Biological Molecules.
  • Cells.
  • Organisms exchange substances with their environment.
  • Genetic Information, variation and relationships between organisms.

What will I be covering in the course in Year 13?

Year 13:

  • Energy Transfers in and between organisms.
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments.
  • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems.
  • The control of gene expression.

Additional Information about the Course

As with all sciences, biology is fundamentally an experimental subject. Practical skills will be developed throughout the course and assessed within your final exams. Both exams will require the use of Higher tier GCSE mathematical skills. You will need to achieve a grade 6 or above in mathematics to gain a place on the course.
