WHY STUDY FOOD & NUTRITION?

Food & Nutrition is a subject where students learn the principles of food science, nutrition, and healthy eating. The course structure creates a balance between practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding.

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of food’s functional properties and chemical characteristics, as well as a sound knowledge of the nutritional content of food and drinks. Students will be able to understand the relationship between diet, nutrition and health, including the physiological and psychological effects of poor diet and health.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE

Students will build on their practical skills and subject knowledge gained in Key Stage 3. The dishes students will prepare, and cook will be more challenging and complex. Students will develop their ability to apply fundamental knowledge from nutrition principles to their practical lessons.

HOW WILL STUDENTS BE ASSESSED

Assessment 1: Written examination: 50% of the final grade.  

Assessment 2: The Food Investigation Assessment, 15% of the final grade.

A scientific food investigation will assess the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding of scientific
principles underlying the preparation and cooking of food.  

Assessment 3: The Food Preparation Assessment, 35% of the final grade.

Prepare, cook and present a menu which assesses the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding
of the planning, preparation, cooking and presentation of food.
