WHY STUDY DRAMA?
Drama is the expression and exploration of personal, cultural and social worlds through role and situation that engages, entertains and challenges. Taking this subject enables students to create meaning as drama makers, performers and audiences as they enjoy and analyse their own and others’ stories and points of view. Like all art forms, Drama can inspire and enrich all students, excite the imagination and encourage students to reach their creative and expressive potential.
Who should I take Drama?
Those with a keen interest in performance, drama and theatre with enthusiasm for performing and creating work. Those wishing to pursue further education or a career in performance, drama or theatre. Those able to collaborate and work well with others to develop ideas for performance. Those keen to learn to articulate opinions, debate sophisticatedly and analyse and evaluate work.
What other skills will students gain?
Confidence in public speaking, communicating opinions and sharing ideas. Collaboration, building strong relationships and working as part of a team. Communication skills – interviews, phone calls, talking to members of the public, and presentations. An understanding of the wider world through an up-to-date curriculum. Developing empathy, sympathy and an understanding of others.

Importance/relevance to your career/job:
I would recommend the subject of Drama to anyone aspiring to become a teacher. I have taught at both secondary and primary levels and find that many skills gained through studying the subject are pivotal to a teacher’s success, including building confidence, developing a presence in the classroom and improvisation (for when things go wrong!). The subject also teaches empathy and challenges students to question how certain images/words/actions are perceived, which is knowledge teachers use in their day-to-day lesson planning when designing suitable learning objectives and ensuring that their lesson is appropriate for students of all abilities.
