Download: Setting Information 2017-18
For organisational purposes, students are divided into two parallel (not ability) bands named T and G. The students in each band are divided into teaching groups, the size of which vary in different subjects. For example, some practical lessons have smaller groups than non-practical lessons.
Organisation of teaching groups within a band varies between different subjects. Teachers recognise that students all learn at different rates and lessons are differentiated to meet the demands of every individual.
Option subjects do not have ability / attainment sets in any year group:
- Art & Photography
- Business Studies
- Child Development
- Computer Science
- Graphic Design
- Healthy Living / Food
- Media Studies
- Product Design
Students are set in PE which is based on their ability across 4 areas: quality and range of skills, decision making, character and physical attributes. Changes to sets are made regularly (particularly at KS3) as physical maturity can change students’ ability very quickly.
Core Subjects: English, maths, science and RE
We believe that students can achieve success in any teaching group. Sometimes, questions can arise based on the teaching set number attached to a particular group; we do not think this is helpful and aim to stretch and challenge every student and every group in the school. As such, from September 2017, teaching sets in the core subjects of English / RE, maths and science will no longer by indicated by number; instead, initials linked to great writers, mathematicians and scientists will be used.
Students will cover the same curriculum and complete the same learning checks and assessments. Broad streaming will still take place but this labelling system will allow all students to study the curriculum, free from any bias that may be associated with a setting hierarchy. Staff and subject leaders will review setting and streaming arrangements regularly to ensure that provision is appropriate.
Science in more detail
All students are taught biology, chemistry and physics content in mixed attainment sets in Year 7 and 8. They will then choose either the ‘trilogy’ or ‘separate science’ route for Year 9 onwards.
Trilogy students are taught biology, chemistry and physics content in attainment sets based on performance in Y7 and Y8 examinations, assessments and teacher judgement. These sets will be reviewed on an annual basis following further assessment.
Separate science students are taught biology, chemistry and physics by three specialist teachers in mixed attainment sets in Y9 which will be refined into attainment based sets following examinations, assessments and teacher judgement in Y10 and Y11.
