What specification is proposed?

AQA A-Level Art and Design (Fine Art)

A level Art and Design is a diverse, challenging and rewarding course which combines practical skills with an independent development of ideas. The full course is made up of 2 components through which students can experiment with a range of techniques and processes to create an exciting portfolio of their work.

Students are encouraged to independently develop their own ideas and processes, based on the visual world around them. They will record ideas and processes from primary and secondary sources in a personal journal or sketchbook. Students will draw on historical and contemporary sources in order to contextualize their own work. Students have the opportunity to explore the following disciplines:

  • 2 dimensional drawing, painting and mixed media processes
  • Sculpture
  • Photography and photo-shop based processes
  • Printmaking
  • Textiles
  • Installation

The department runs a number of trips to galleries and exhibitions, through which students can develop their own ideas in relation to the work of others.

We hold an annual exhibition at The Courtyard Gallery within The Core, Solihull for our A level students, allowing students to exhibit their work publicly.

What will I be covering in the course in Year 12?

During the first year of the course students produce a portfolio of work covering a wide range of 2D and 3D techniques, to allow them to develop their skills and build a substantial portfolio of work. Students will then begin their personal investigation into a theme of their choice.

What will I be covering in the course in Year 13?

Component 1: 60% of qualification NEA

During the second year of the course students will be expected to develop their personal investigation, in which they explore their own ideas and processes in relation to the work of other artists, designers or craftspeople. Students will be expected to produce an extended coursework folder with a supporting essay of 1000-3000 words.

Component 2: 40% of qualification NEA

Students receive an externally set assignment set by AQA which includes a number of questions based around a theme. Students select one question and independently produce a volume of preparatory studies. Students use this work to inform the final piece produced in a practical fifteen hour exam.

How will I be assessed? All assessments take place in the summer of Year 13.

All components are “non-exam assessments” (NEA) and will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Develop ideas through investigations informed by contextual sources.
  • Explore and select resources, media, materials, techniques and processes ? refining idea development.
  • Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions.
  • Present a personal, informed and meaningful response from ideas. Make connections between visual and written elements.

Specific entry requirements for this course

  • Students must achieve a 6 grade at GCSE Art.
  • External applicants will be asked to email a portfolio of their work prior to enrolment
